Janet Williams specializes in environmental education and geographic information systems for DuPage County
WHEATON, IL, July 22, 2011 /Science and Research PR News/ -- Janet L. Williams, Environmental Research Technician for DuPage County, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in environmental research.
With 37 years of professional experience, Ms. Williams has fine-tuned an expertise in geographic information systems. She lends her talents to DuPage County, where she performs an array of important functions as an environmental research technician. These include transferring old hand-drawn maps into current geographic information systems and computer storage, handling the public works department's historical information and land assessments and acquisitions, creating maps in accordance with geographic information systems parameters, managing title work and contracts, and coordinating all special service data and maps
.
Ms. Williams' work at the DuPage County Public Works Department routed her to public service with the Girl Scouts of the USA, which she joined to provide her daughters with positive social enrichment and valuable life lessons. After attaining assistant, then Girl Scout Troop leader position, she started working as a volunteer for her daughter's elementary school, PTA and the local Park District. Ms. Williams continues her involvement in education today, serving as an environmental chairwoman for local schools, teaching environmental classes to fourth and fifth graders, starting up a park district environmental club, and instructing students on natural camouflage, yards and parks, bird migration, animal tracks, nesting patterns, wetlands and flood plains.
Noted for her work in the community, Ms. Williams managed to gain access to the local Park District-Churchill Park and has since developed it into an educational park where the Girl Scouts can earn badges, school classes can get hands-on environmental training and families can spend time enjoying nature. She also got Churchill Park dedicated as an Educational Park and is in the process of gathering the funds to construct a building and stock it with computers, microscopes and other tools for youth group education. One of her most recent projects was a PowerPoint book on the park, which includes a map of the park using GPS data she gathered and the geographic information system's parameters. It is now used extensively for the park's history, applications, handouts and general information.
A loyal alumna of the College of DuPage, Ms. Williams earned an Associate of Applied Science in architecture, an associate degree in computer science, and an associate degree in geographic information systems. She holds a certification from the Homeland Security Community Emergency Response Team, a certification in legal issues and practical considerations from Lorman: Certification in Law of Easements, a certification in the principles of real estate acquisitions from the International Right of Way Association, certifications in First Aid and CPR, and a certification in geographic information systems from Elmhurst College.
