William R. Knight has been accepted among the prestigious ranks of Stanford Who's Who as a result of his phenomenal professional career.
PALMER, AK, November 26, 2010 /Stanford Who's Who/ -- William R. Knight has been accepted among the prestigious ranks of Stanford Who's Who as a result of his phenomenal professional career. As a Tsunami Warning and Science Officer and Deputy Director of the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center, Mr. Knight has consistently demonstrated the vision, dedication and diligence necessary to be considered among the best.
The West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center is one of two NOAA Tsunami Warning Centers in the United States. They collaborate with the Richard H. Hagemeyer Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii to provide tsunami warning service, and mutual backup, to tsunami threatened areas throughout the United States and many other countries throughout the world. They are responsible for warning the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Island Coast of potential tsunami threats.
In order to accomplish its mission of providing accurate and timely tsunami bulletins to its area of responsibility, the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center detects, locates, sizes and analyzes earthquakes worldwide. Earthquakes that activate the center's alarm system lead them to an investigation which includes automatic locating and sizing the earthquake; earthquake analysis and review; sea level data analysis to verify the existence of a tsunami and to calibrate models; and disseminating information to the appropriate emergency management officials.
Mr. Knight possesses particular expertise in computational fluid dynamics and he is currently working on developing new tsunami forecast models. He attributes his success to a long term love of physics, mathematics and public service combined with his incredible perseverance. During his educational career, William earned a Master's degree in Physics and he is currently working towards his PhD in Physical Oceanography.
William is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Mr. Knight has been published in numerous publications such as HP Measure, IS&T Journal of non-impact Printing, Science of Tsunami Hazards, and the Journal of Applied Physics. In the time away from his busy schedule, William greatly enjoys hiking, running and reading.
