COLUMBIA, SC, October 7, 2010 /Science and Research PR News/ -- Dr. John L. Safko Sr., Treasurer of the National Association of Academies of Science, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in physics and astronomy.
For five years, Dr. Safko has served as the treasurer of the National Association of Academies of Science, an information exchange agency that provides communication among state and Regional academies of science and to students who are entering the world of science, engineering and technology. As treasurer, he manages the sending and receiving of funds for convention fees and reservations and other expenses. He has worked as a professor of physics and astronomy for over 40 years, which has earned him recognition as an expert in physics and astronomy education. He retired from the University of South Carolina as a Distinguished Professor Emeritus in 2004 with recognition as an expert in physics and astronomy. He has co-authored several graduate texts, has reviewed and written research papers in general relativity, and developed a sequence of self-paced astronomy courses for non-science majors.
In 1965, Dr. Safko received a Ph.D. in Physics from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned a Bachelor of Science in physics from Case Institute of Technology in 1960. Dr. Safko serves as treasurer of the local chapter of the Explorer's Club. He is a fellow in the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He maintains membership with the American Association of Physics Teachers, and the International Astronomical Union. He previously served as treasurer and COO of the South Carolina Academy of Science for 35 years.
He has advanced within his field because of his drive to complete a project to the best of his ability. In the future, he intends to continue sharing his knowledge of science, inspiring students to work to their full potential.
