New Research on the Economic Effects of Social Networks

Daniel Birke, Head of Research at Idiro Technologies, publishes top-ranking research paper on the effects of social communities on government and business

DUBLIN, IRELAND, November 21, 2008 /Science and Research PR News/ -- Ever notice how if your best friend has a cool new gadget (especially if he/she is happy with it) you are that much more likely to get the same one for yourself? Or, are you the person who resists new gadgets until basically everyone on the street has one?

You may be surprised to know that there is hard science behind how that happens. Academics the world over study how people affect each other in terms of both marketing - the gadget example - and what implication that has for public policy. Scientists realise that the speed and structure of how information and products spread in our society can heavily influence the work of governments and businesses.

Dr. Birke, Idiro's head of research, and his team do a great deal of work in this area. His paper, The Economics of Networks - A Survey of the Empirical Literature, currently ranks as one the most-read papers on the internationally leading eLibrary web sites. The paper is published in affliliation with Nottingham University Business School. An excerpt from the abstract says, "The paper argues that a closer analysis of the network structure of consumer interaction promises fruitful future research avenues and advances in our understanding of how network effects operate."

Idiro' s customers and partners are already using the understanding of network effects to achieve quantifiable business results.

Dr. Birke's paper is available at http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1264662.
